The Student Activities Board, responsible for most social events on campus and beyond, has rebranded as “MacEntertainment.” However, along with the new name came the cancellation of several beloved events, including bingo, $2 movies, and free bowling. These events have, for the longest time, served as stress-free escapes for students, offering opportunities to bond with friends, meet new people, and enjoy affordable entertainment, which is already a struggle these days.
Their removal has sparked widespread criticism. We asked students around campus for their input, and the general consensus remained: these cuts were a blow to students’ quality of life here on campus. “I think it’s ridiculous,” one student chimed in. “The school cares more about their money, caring less about what students want, so they look good for potential investors.” Another student expressed their frustration that funding seems to be focused elsewhere: “The school should be investing this money back into things for students that aren’t just sports related.”
The Dean of Students, Dan Falk, stated in an e-mail that the events were “outdated” and “poorly attended most of the time.” He believes that the events could be brought back; however, they’d have to “be revisioned so they have a fresh appeal.” Falk stated that both he and Ashley Templeton were looking into new ideas for events students would enjoy, such as “Bulldogs After Dark and laser tag, tournaments, crafting, do it yourself programs, intramurals, game nights, etc.”
Students have voiced concerns about the lack of communication and transparency surrounding these decisions. Many feel blindsided, noting that these activities were not just fun but also a part of the school’s identity. The rebrand may have been intended to bring new energy to campus programming, but for many students, it’s had the opposite effect thus far.
