Two Major League Baseball pitchers are in serious trouble with the law for allegedly taking part in an illegal gambling scheme that includes fixing pitches during games. Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase and right-handed starter Luis L. Ortiz have been indicted on a number of charges filed in connection with alleged gambling misconduct. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced the indictment Sunday, in a stunning case that has sent shockwaves within the baseball world.
Prosecutors said Clase and Ortiz conspired with gamblers to alter bets on pitches during individual games. The Department of Justice indicted two people on counts of wire fraud conspiracy, honest service conspiracy, and also conspiracy to influencing sports events with bribery, and also money laundering. All these counts can possibly lead up to 65 years in federal prison.
Luis L. Ortiz was arrested in Boston and made his first court appearance on not too long ago. According to The Athletic, Ortiz was granted release on a $500,000 bond. He Is needed to stay in Boston except when he is traveling for court out in New York or to go meet with his attorney in Cleveland. Recently he was forced to give up his passport to try and prevent him from fleeing the country while the case is still on going. Prosecutors say that Ortiz begin his involvement back in June 2025, and helped betters up to around $60,000 in winnings.
Even though Emmanuel Clase has not yet been arrested, the indictment states that he, began his participation earlier, back in May 2023. Prosecutors say people who have been betting have made over $700,000 just on Clase alone. In all, investors claim that bettors working with the two players took in at least $450,000 through online betting platforms. It’s just continuing to get deeper to the point that even during games Clase would exchange messages back and forth, possibly to signal when to place a certain bet.
Clase,27, has been a top relief pitcher these past couple of years and a main piece to the Guardians bullpen. Ortiz is a young right-handed pitcher who is considered to a future piece to their rotation. Now, both players are in the world of the unknown, not must legally, but in their professional baseball career as well.
Major League Baseball (MLB) spoke on issue, expressing that they are aware of the indictments and are fully open with the federal investigators. The league stated that they are waiting to see the process takes it on way before they decide on what disciplinary actions on their end. However, MLB officials made it very clear that they do not Condon the gambling related actions and any proven violations can lead to a possible ban for life.
This scandal comes at a time when sports betting is becoming increasingly common and accessible throughout the United States. Many fans and experts alike fear the precedence these cases set for the erosion of public trust in professional sports as fair.
