Minor Thoughts: A poem

Everyone claims some sort of minority,

But are we right to assume all minorities alike?

Whether our minorities are major or minor,

No one person is made up of either.

A man with a mole, for instance,

Claims his gender as majority

And his mole-having as minority.

A baby with a light complexion

Could fear her pink blanket,

But at least there is white skin underneath.

So do we fairly compare a mole-having minority

To a gender minority?

To a race minority?

To an ability minority?

Like a rich white man in a rich white house

Who tries to understand (or doesn’t)

The struggles of an immigrant family,

We are quick to relate our moles

To the pain of our neighbors.
