A new club joined McPherson College, and it is bringing heat with the topics of discussion. Students For Liberty, or SFL, is a student-led organization that brings in those interested in expressing their thoughts and opinions of every kind. Whether it is politics, immigration, or even local zoning law, SFL is not afraid of talking about the hot topics in a calm setting that lets everyone express their opinions without judgment.
Claire McCullough, Secretary of SFL, spoke about the focus of the club and its openness to everyone: “SLF focuses on providing a place that everybody can speak their mind in and practice free speech no matter democrat, republican, libertarian or any political party.” Evan Kemp, President of SFL, spoke further on the what the club is all about: “Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of movement. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, you should be allowed to say it.”
SFL is supposed to be a space for everyone. A safe space where everybody is heard and allowed to express their thoughts and opinions on some of the tough issues. Kemp says one of his focuses is keeping it that way: “For the campus aspect, we are really trying to show that you should be allowed to talk about politics and that you can talk about politics in a non-violent, non-threatening way. Where you can get together without yelling or screaming or being frightened about speaking your mind.”
Students For Liberty meets every other Monday from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the basement of Miller Library. This could be subject to change depending on newcomers and their schedules. Kemp says he wants to make the club accessible to as many people as possible that are interested. Everyone is welcome to join and see what the hot topics are and what Students for Liberty is really about.
