As midterm elections creep in, citizens around the nation are beginning to register to vote. September 25th is National Voter Registration Day. The holiday was first observed in 2012 and is always on the fourth Tuesday of September. Every year Americans miss the chance to vote; National Voter Registration Day provides those a chance to get registered and prepared to vote for upcoming elections.
Tomorrow McPherson College’s History and Communication departments will be hosting a registration voter drive in the lobby of the Student Union between 11:30 am and 1 pm. Anyone can come to register or to assure that they are already registered to vote. In order to get the process complete, one needs to bring a valid ID. In addition, there will be help with getting absentee vote requests for students who are registered out of state. It is important to keep in mind that McPherson College students are allowed to vote in the state of Kansas instead of their home state (if they so choose).
Furthermore, students will get a chance to vote on what will be the next cafeteria cooking class and the make your own dessert bar. The first one hundred students to come register to vote will also receive a voucher that they can turn in for a free t-shirt to tie dye shirts with the Spectator staff that evening of the 25th. National Voter Registration Day is a time to remind citizens that their voices matter through voting and the process of democracy in America. Midterm elections in November are exceptionally important because the fate of over 500 elected officials across the country is decided. McPherson College has decided to be politically aware this year and remind its students that voting always matters.
