Coming off the previous week’s game against Oklahoma State, to whom K-State fell 29-21, star quarterback Will Howard rushed for over 100 yards after taking drives into his own hands, frustrated by incomplete pass after incomplete pass. Despite K-State’s seven consecutive wins against Texas Tech, fans were nervous after watching the team’s performance during the last three games:

Versus Oklahoma State – L 29-21

Versus University of Central Florida – W 44-31

Versus University of Missouri – L 30-27

K-State was first to score with a 47-yard field goal by kicker Chris Tennant. With less than three minutes left in a slow, defensive first quarter, Will Howard was subbed out for Avery Johnson and the rest is history—literally. This game was Johnson’s first NCAA appearance, and he rocked it. Over the next three quarters, Johnson completed 8 of 9 passes to receivers and tied the school record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Johnson racked up a total of 91 rushing yards from 12 keepers, as well as 77 passing yards. Johnson’s stellar performance would grant K-State their eighth consecutive win against Texas Tech.
